Anomaly Guard is a psychological horror game in which players experience a simulation set inside the abandoned Malaysian Seri Gading School. Players take on the role of a night shift security guard who accepts an urgent job offer with an unusually high pay rate of $650 USD per night. Anomaly Guard uses fear as its main weapon, attacking the player’s mental state as they are forced to constantly observe their surroundings and solve puzzles under relentless vigilance from midnight until dawn.
Anomaly Guard belongs to three different categories that define its gameplay elements through psychological tension and mental stress–based mechanics. The game takes place in a familiar yet haunting setting: an old, dark school that creates an atmosphere filled with isolation and persistent fear.
The unique aspect of Anomaly Guard lies in its fear-building approach, which generates terror through gradual pressure rather than sudden loud noises or cheap jump scares. Each night shift becomes a true test of concentration and emotional control. Players must pay attention to even the smallest details, as a single mistake can lead to dangerous consequences that affect both the character’s physical safety and mental stability.
The game creates a strong impact through its use of Malaysian ghost legends, which provide authentic local cultural elements that make the gameplay experience different from most Western horror games.
The majority of your time should be spent sitting in the guard room while you watch over the security camera system. The Seri Gading school is divided into 9 monitoring areas:
Players need to remember the “normal” state of each area to promptly detect any unusual changes.
When an anomaly appears, you must not only see it but also accurately classify it in the REPORT menu. Anomaly types include:
False or omitted reports will increase danger and decrease Sanity.
Sanity is a core element. When your sanity is low, you will start hearing heartbeats, phantom footsteps, whispers – extremely dangerous, distracting hallucinations. If Sanity runs out, the game ends with a haunting “Sanity Death.”
The school’s electrical system is unstable. When the power goes out, you are forced to leave the safe room and go into the dark area to fix the circuit breaker using a timed minigame. Meanwhile, entities can directly infiltrate the security room.
If attacked, you must hide under a table or in a cupboard and participate in a breathing control minigame, maintaining balance with the breathing bar using the A/D keys to avoid detection.
The game features many familiar spirits from Malaysian culture, such as Pocong, Pontianak, Toyol, Hantu Galah, Penanggalan, and Orang Minyak. This is a major plus in terms of experience and cultural depth.
The simple, familiar control system allows players to focus entirely on observation and decision-making – true to the spirit of traditional horror games.
